“In Mrs Dalloway, Peter Walsh walks through Trafalgar Square still in love with a woman he has just seen again. In lockdown, the square waited for its own reunions.”

About this place

Trafalgar Square was laid out in the 1840s to a design by Sir Charles Barry and named after Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Nelson's Column stands about 52 metres high, with four bronze lions at its base, and the National Gallery fills the north side. The square is usually crowded. This photograph was taken during lockdown, when it was almost empty.
