“London’s meat market has traded here for more than 800 years. In lockdown, its Victorian halls kept watch over an empty street.”
About this place
Smithfield Market has been a place of livestock and meat trading for hundreds of years, and the Victorian market halls standing today were designed by the City architect Horace Jones and opened in 1868. The ironwork, the painted dragons and the long red-and-cream halls are among the finest examples of Victorian market architecture in London. The site, close to the Barbican and St Paul's, is now being reshaped for new uses. Photographed during lockdown.
